In commemoration of the 2025 World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day, the Akwa Ibom State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Publicity Secretary, Edwin Ebiese, has partnered the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health to embark on a comprehensive awareness campaign on the availability of free surgery and treatment for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

The campaign, which kicked off from Ministry of Health, Abak Road, Uyo, the state capital, took the team to major markets and popular areas, including the Akpan Andem Market, to sensitize the public on the importance of accessing medical care for NTDs.

Dr. Ime Udo, State NTDs Coordinator, who led the campaign team, expressed his commitment to supporting the state government’s efforts in combating diseases, as Edwin Ebiese emphasized that the awareness campaign was crucial in enlightening the public on the causes, symptoms, and treatment options available for NTDs.

“Neglected Tropical Diseases are a major public health concern, and it is imperative that we take proactive steps to educate our people on the importance of seeking medical attention,” Ebiese said.

He added that “as a responsible citizen and a stakeholder in our state, I am committed to supporting initiatives that promote healthcare and wellbeing in our state.”

The awareness campaign team distributed educational materials, including flyers, posters, and brochures, which provided information on the common types of NTDs prevalent in the state, such as lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, and schistosomiasis. The team also engaged with market women, traders, and other stakeholders, providing them with information on the free surgery and treatment options available at designated health facilities across the state.

Dr. Ime Udo of Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health, commended Edwin Ebiese and his team for their efforts in supporting the campaign, emphasizing that the partnership was a testament to the state commitment to collaborative efforts in promoting healthcare and wellbeing in the state.

“We appreciate the support of Edwin Ebiese and his team in our efforts to combat NTDs in Akwa Ibom State,” Dr. Udo said.

“Their commitment to raising awareness on the importance of accessing medical care for NTDs is laudable, and we look forward to continuing our partnership in promoting healthcare and wellbeing in our state.”

As part of the awareness campaign, the team also engaged with community leaders, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders, soliciting their support in disseminating information on the free surgery and treatment options available for NTDs.
